Privacy Policy
Last updated October 9, 2026
This policy explains what information the Knit & Crochet: Purl app ("Purl", "we", "us") collects, how we use it, and the choices you have. It applies to the Purl app for iPhone and iPad and to this website.
The short version
- We don't show ads, and we don't sell your personal information.
- Your projects, patterns, notes, photos, and stash are private to your account. Feature requests you post are public to other app users but shown anonymously.
- Usage analytics, screen recordings, and crash reports are tied to a random account ID, never your name or email. Typed text and images are blacked out of recordings, and you can turn all of it off.
- You can export all of your data or delete your account at any time from the app.
Information you give us
Your account
You sign in with Apple, Google, or an email code. We receive your email address (with Sign in with Apple, this may be a private relay address) and an identifier from the sign-in provider. We use these to sign you in and keep your data in sync across your devices.
Your crafting data
The app stores what you add to it so you can use it on any device: your profile choices (craft, experience level, weekly goal, units, and terminology), projects, counters and row notes, crafting sessions and timers, patterns (including PDFs, images, web links, and notes), your stash of yarn, needles, hooks, and supplies, and photos you attach. You choose what to add. Photos and files are only accessed when you pick or take them.
Support requests
If you contact support or report a bug from the app, we receive your message, the email address you enter for our reply, and basic diagnostic details: app version, iOS version, device model, and your account ID. These messages are deleted when you delete your account.
Feature requests
In Tools → Settings → Help → Feature Requests you can post ideas for the app, vote, and comment. Posts and comments are public to other app users and are shown anonymously as "A knitter", never with your name or email. We store them with your account ID so you can delete your own and so we can act on reports. If you report a post or comment, or choose to hide posts from someone, we store that too. All of it is deleted when you delete your account.
Ravelry connection
Connecting your Ravelry account is optional. You sign in on Ravelry's own page, so we never see your Ravelry password. Ravelry then gives our server access tokens, which we store encrypted and use only to show your Ravelry library, projects, queue, and favorites in the app; to import PDFs you own (including adding a free pattern to your Ravelry library when you save it); and to post a finished project to Ravelry when you choose to. You can disconnect at any time in Tools → Settings → Ravelry, and the tokens are deleted when you disconnect or delete your account. Ravelry's own privacy policy covers what happens on Ravelry.
Information collected automatically
- Usage analytics. Events such as screens viewed and features used, so we can see what works and what to improve. These are linked to your random account ID only. We never send your patterns, notes, or photos as analytics events.
- Session replay. To find confusing screens and bugs, the app records how screens are used: taps, scrolls, and screenshots of what's on screen. Before anything leaves your phone, everything you type into a field and every image, such as project photos and pattern pages, is blacked out. Recordings are linked to the same random account ID as analytics and are kept by PostHog for up to 90 days.
- Crash reports and performance data. When the app crashes or runs slowly, we receive a technical report including the device model, iOS version, and app version, linked to your account ID. A crash or error report may include a short replay of the moments just before it happened, never of ordinary use, with every word and every image masked.
- Notifications. If you allow notifications, we store your device's push token so we can send them. Goal and project reminders are scheduled on your device.
- Purchases. Apple handles all payments. For Premium subscriptions we receive transaction details from Apple (such as the product, purchase and renewal dates, subscription status, and transaction IDs) linked to your account. We never see your payment card details.
Some settings, such as haptics, keeping the screen awake, and your color palette, stay on your device. The app also keeps a copy of your data on your device so it works offline.
How we use information
- To provide the app, back up your data, and sync it across your devices
- To manage Premium subscriptions
- To send the reminders and notifications you've chosen
- To answer support requests and fix bugs
- To understand how the app is used and decide what to build next
- To prevent abuse and keep the service secure
We don't use your information for advertising, and we don't sell it or share it for cross-context behavioral advertising.
Service providers
We rely on a small number of providers that process data on our behalf, only to run the app:
- Supabase: account sign-in, database, and file storage (hosted in the United States)
- PostHog: usage analytics and session replay
- Sentry: crash reports, performance monitoring, and replays of the moments before an error
- Resend: delivers support requests to our inbox
- Apple and Google: sign-in, and for Apple, App Store purchases and push notifications
When you search for patterns in Discover, our server sends your search terms and filters to Ravelry. We don't send your account details with those searches. The app no longer shows Etsy listings, so nothing is sent to Etsy. Websites you open from the app, such as pattern sites, have their own privacy policies.
Your choices
- Turn off analytics, session replay, and crash reports: Tools → Settings → Privacy → Share Analytics & Crash Reports.
- Disconnect Ravelry: Tools → Settings → Ravelry, at any time. This deletes the Ravelry tokens we store.
- Feature requests: delete your own posts and comments at any time, and report or hide posts from others, in Tools → Settings → Help → Feature Requests.
- Notifications: turn them on or off at any time in iOS Settings.
- Export your data: Tools → Settings → Your Data → Export JSON or Export CSV.
- Delete your data: Tools → Settings → Your Data → Delete All Data removes your projects, patterns, counters, notes, sessions, and stash.
- Delete your account: Tools → Settings → Account → Delete Account permanently deletes your account, your data, and your uploaded files. If you use Sign in with Apple, we also revoke the app's access to your Apple Account.
How long we keep information
We keep your data for as long as you have an account. When you delete your account, your data and files are deleted from our systems, including your support messages, your feature requests, comments, votes, and reports, and any Ravelry tokens. We may keep limited records, such as purchase records, where we need them for legal, accounting, or fraud-prevention reasons. Analytics, session replays, and crash data are kept by our providers for a limited period (up to 90 days for session replays) and are linked only to a random ID.
Security
Data is encrypted in transit. Each account can only read and change its own data, which is enforced by the database itself. No system is perfectly secure, but we work to protect your information and collect only what the app needs.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, export, or delete your personal information, or to object to how it's used. Most of this can be done directly in the app. For anything else, contact us and we'll respond within the time the law requires.
Children
Purl isn't directed to children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has given us personal information, contact us and we'll delete it.
International users
We're based in the United States and our providers process data there. By using the app, you understand that your information will be processed in the United States.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top of this page. For significant changes, we'll let you know in the app.
Contact us
The quickest way to reach us is from inside the app: open Tools → Settings → Help → Contact Support.
